Description

This course investigates the experiences of Orthodox Christians and considers key questions generated by their arrival on the American continent, from the colonial period to the present. While we will pay particular attention to the formation and development of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, this course is not simply an institutional history—it will also consider popular expressions of Orthodox Christianity in the New World and diverse voices that echo through the Church’s dynamic history in the Americas. We will encounter key figures and institutions, as well as persons on the periphery, and navigate the shifting boundaries that shaped the world of Orthodox Christianity in America at different moments in history. We will also attend to the enculturation of Orthodox faith and practice in America, as well as how the Orthodox Church has responded to the social, cultural, and political developments in its American context.
