This course is designed to familiarize students with the thought, sensibility, and vision of the world thatis reflected in the works of selected Americanauthors of the past. Through the study of literature,students gain a perspective and a deeperunderstanding of the United States’ social history,culture, and the development of its multiculturalvoices that have become part of its nationalidentity. The class explores works by many authorsincluding Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry DavidThoreau, Edgar Allen Poe, Harriet Beecher Stowe,Emily Dickinson, and Zora Neale Hurston.Prerequisite: English Composition I and II
