Contemporary Social Problems (HNRS 4922)

In this course you will explore a number of social problems that challenge us to dig deeper into how those problems are maintained and sustained over time. We will not cover all the social problems that exist today. We will, however, gain a deeper understanding of some of the major issues that confront us and dare us to discover (or rediscover) ways to alleviate suffering and improve the human condition. Though we will touch on the globalization of certain problems, we will focus most of our attention on the existence of those problems in the United States. In addition, we will examine we, as individuals and communities, position ourselves within the contexts social issues that are difficult to address. Equally important, we will develop a sense of how we can contribute to the betterment of people?s individual and societal realities.
