Mystagogy:The Mystery of the Church (PATR 7030)
Term: Academic Year 2021-2022 Spring
Wed, 9:10 AM - 11:30 AM (1/18/2022 - 5/20/2022) Location: MAIN CLASS READ
Mystagogy is a word designating theological initiation into the mystery of the Church. Mystagogical catechesis emerged in the late fourth century with the work of Cyril of Jerusalem, Ambrose of Milan, and John Chrysostom, and reached its highest form in Dionysios the Areopagite and Maximos the Confessor. This course begins with a survey of early patristic mystagogical texts, after which the focus is on a close reading of On the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy of Dionysios, and the Mystagogy of Maximos the Confessor. Members of the seminar will participate in the spring Colloquium on the Mystagogy (April 28-30). Prerequisites: Biblical Greek I and II, Liturgical Greek.
