Description
This is a course on the Mother of God in the Orthodox tradition, with special attention to the Mother of God and the Passion, a conenction that became especially prominent after Iconoclasm. Through the study of theological works, homilies, epigrams, ecclesiastical poetry/hymnology, liturgy, and iconography, the history and theology of Orthodox devotion to the Theotokos will emerge in all its richness and compexity. Literary and artistic sources from the Middle and Late Byzantine periods will receive special attention, as will the tradition of the Virgin's Lament and the crucifixion and burial of Christ.
